Yawn Advent Calendar Day 14 – Chocolate Rooibos

It’s a Rooibos day here in Yawn-Advent-Calendar-land. Day 14 has brought forth Chocolate Rooibos. I do love a chocolate tea. I think I mentioned that last time I had a beverage with cocoa pieces in it, and you know what, it’s still true a whole 3 days later.

Rooibos is a funny old herb. It’s not tea but I do nonetheless have a lot of time for it. It’s a spiky, gorse-looking plant that grows in one particular place in South Africa, and it tastes all cosy and cakey when you brew it up with hot water. No one is ever going to mistake it for Camelia Sinensis in a beverage-tasting line-up, but it probably doesn’t care. It’s all “I am what I am. Take it or leave it.” (In a South African accent.)

And it doesn’t contain caffeine, which is handy sometimes if, like me, you think it’s probably a good idea to lay off the stimulants after about 8pm in the evening. (I know a lot of people have earlier caffeine cut-off times, but hey, I’ve got a lot of tea-imbibing to fit into my day.

Yawn’s Chocolate Rooibos is a delight. Mostly due to the fact that it has rooibos and cocoa bean pieces in it. It also has calendula petals and natural flavourings in it, because Yawn love bunging those things in their brews. Seven out of the fourteen teas so far have included calendula petals, which is the genus that includes marigolds and related marigoldy-like flowers. I’m not sure what they do taste-wise here but hey, they’re welcome to hang around as far as I’m concerned. This a damn fine example of a chocolate rooibos, flower petals and all.
