Tea India, as we established in a previous post, produce a damn near perfect Masala Chai tea. I have since discovered that Masala isn’t the only tea in Tea India’s Chai armoury. There’s a whole herd of chai blends. And so I have naturally decided that it’s my duty to try all of them.
First up (or second up, if you count Masala Chai, I suppose), is Coconut Chai. This is the coconuttiest thing I’ve ever had in my whole life. I was going to say ‘except for an actual coconut’ but changed my mind. Because this tea is more coconutty than a coconut.
Unlikely as this might sound, a quick glance at the ingredients list reveals that this tea is 7% coconut flavouring, which is presumably either some kind of distilled essence of concentrated coconut or something that has been entirely created in a lab. I hope it’s not the latter. There is a certain filmy oiliness to this tea, which suggests its coconut credentials are legit.
I did enjoy it, but all the other ingredients – cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, black pepper, clove and anise – were swamped somewhat by the coconut, which rather diminished its supposed chai-ness. It’s no replacement for Masala Chai but then it’s not trying to be.
If the Tea India Chai family were a sitcom, then I reckon Coconut Chai is playing the role of the eccentric next door neighbour.
