This Banana Bread Chai is another rooibos number. In addition to rooibos, it’s got cinnamon, ginger, freeze-dried banana, cardamom, vanilla and natural flavouring.
It’s very nice in a spicy rooibos sort of way. It’s just not very banana-y. In fact I couldn’t actually taste the banana here at all. It’s a great shame because Banana Bread Chai does, in fact, have actual bananas in it.
The only other banana-bread-themed tea I’ve tried is T2’s Banana Bake. That was definitely more banana-y than this one. But then T2 do cheerfully admit to using artificial flavourings in their tea blends.
It’s probably easier to get a strident banana taste when your flavourings are cooked up in a lab somewhere. (‘Natural flavourings’ are probably cooked up in a lab as well. But I like to think that the scientists in those labs at least wear white coats made of organic cotton and hemp fibres.)
I would happily keep drinking this brew. The spices are all putting on a good show and I don’t even like bananas very much. I just think it could do with a name change.
