The Lawn – English Breakfast Tea
Happy New Year! I’m kicking off the new year with a straight-down-the-line, no-nonsense, tasty English Breakfast tea from The Lawn because that seems appropriate somehow. I love all the frou-frou blends I try. And this Tea Fancier year will no doubt contain all the delicate Darjeelings, wacky dessert-inspired combos, massive leaved Oolongs, and seaweedy Japanese green teas a girl could wish for.
But a proper cup of English Breakfast is still the tea norm to which all other teas are compared. Cultural, historical, and geographical factors mean that this 21st-century white woman from Woking will sip a cup of The Lawn’s blend of Assam and Kenyan teas and go, “Ah. That hits the spot.”
The Lawn do make some lovely teas. As I mention every time I review one of their teas, the company is based close to where I live. I did ask if I could pop round and look at their tea business, but Trevor, the proprietor, pointed out that it’s a very small business, and all I’d be doing would be going round to their house and looking at them packing up some tea boxes. They did send me a whole batch of sample teas, though, which was incredibly kind of them. (This one wasn’t one of the free samples, by the way. I paid top dollar for this English Breakfast. ‘Top Dollar’ being seven quid for 130g which seems an entirely reasonable price for such a nice cuppa.)
Although this is the first tea review of 2025, it wasn’t my first cup of tea of the year. That was Pukka Earl Grey. My gentleman friend and I spent the night at Premier Inn, and we woke too late for me to have a cup of tea before we went down for breakfast. I was determined that I wasn’t going to start the year with a cup of PG Tips, though. Since Premier Inn regrettably switched from Twinings to PG Tips in 2020, I always bring a travelling tea stash with me, so I dipped into that and took my own tastier teabag to the breakfast buffet.
I’m not promising every tea I review this year will be as good as The Lawn’s English Breakfast or Pukka’s Earl Grey. Really, none of us would want that. The negative reviews can be kind of fun. Nonetheless, I feel like the tea year has got off to a jolly good start.
Today’s book pairing is Atomic Habits by James Clear because that seemed appropriately New Years Resolutions-y.
