Yawn Advent Calendar Days 21 to 23 – Gingerbread, Belly Blue and Chilly Willy Chai

Hang onto your Santa hats, everybody. Here’s a whistle-stop rundown of the Yawn advent teas for the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd December.

21stGingerbread

Four Stars

This contains black tea, ginger, cinnamon, cocoa beans, safflower, camomile, star anise, and natural flavours. I was worried about the inclusion of camomile in amongst the cocoa beans and spices, but thankfully, it doesn’t seem to be causing any trouble. This tea isn’t very gingery (or chocolatey, come to that) but it still manages to delight. Yawn certainly seem to opt for ‘cosy’ rather than ‘punchy’ in their spice numbers, but, you know, there’s certainly a place for that in the tea world.

22nd – Belly Blue

one star rating (out of five)

This herbal blend contains butterfly blue pea flower, which I respect as an ingredient because it is so very, very startlingly blue. Unfortunately, Yawn have decided to pair it with the most medicinal bunch of herbal nonsense they could get their hands on. There’s anise, liquorice, fennel, currant, rosehip, hibiscus, star anise, nettle, jasmine and natural flavours in here, and let’s face it, anything with liquorice and nettles in it is not going to be a big hit with me, tastewise.

I assume that the ‘Belly’ part of its name is a reference to its health-giving properties. I’d probably rather have indigestion, to be honest.  I finally got round to drinking Peachy, the fruit tea I skipped on the 15th, just so I could confidently place this at the bottom of the ranking. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to verify any of this because this one doesn’t seem to be available on the Yawn website.

23rdChilly Willy Chai

Five stars

This black tea-based blend contains ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, pepper, clove, nutmeg, calendula petals and natural flavours. As it’s a Yawn chai, don’t expect any big in-your-face spiciness. It’s a warm creamy spicy chai with a vanilla-y hit that makes it rather like drinking lightly spiced custard. Big thumbs up.
