Yawn Advent Calendar Day 7 – Pumpkin Whoopie

This Pumpkin Whoopie tea is amazing. Which is funny because when I read the ingredient list beforehand, I didn’t think I’d be all that keen. What with it having the overused trio of apple, rosehip and hibiscus in it.

But put it all together with black tea, orange, calendula, sunflower petals, cinnamon, and, of course, the apparently obligatory natural flavourings (which I think are doing a lot of the heavy lifting here), and you get something rather marvellous. It certainly doesn’t taste fruity, despite all the fruit-based things on the list. It tastes spicy, nutty and pleasingly cakey. It’s rather like a cinnamon bun in tea form.

Yawn Brew's Pumpkin Whoopie tea

I’ve got to ask though, why are all the festive-themed teas in the calendar American-inspired? Yawn Brew is a British company based in the Peak District. Yet, so far we’ve had Candy Canes and Santa’s Milk & Cookies and now, whoopie pie-inspired tea which is as American as… well, whoopie pies. It’s the state treat of Maine, you know.

I’m only one week in so, maybe the next two-and-a-half weeks will have more traditionally British-inspired Christmas flavours like mince pies, Christmas pudding, and all-the-Quality-Street-chocolates-combined-in-one-mug.

Or we’re going to keep with the whole over-the-pond theme for the rest of Advent. I’m trying to stay spoiler free so I don’t know what’s coming next. My guess is that future teas will taste like sugar cookies, jello salad, sweet potato pie, and Hallmark Christmas movies. Look, I’m not saying that Americans do Christmas wrong. But they don’t have Christmas crackers or Boxing Day. So that’s something to think about.

The Yawn Advent Tea Ranking is below and Pumpkin Whoopie has gone straight to the top. It’s that good.

  1. Pumpkin Whoopie (7th Dec)
  2. Pancake Stack (1st Dec)
  3. Cinnapple Green (6th Dec)
  4. Santa’s Milk & Cookies (3rd Dec)
  5. Sweet Ginger (4th Dec)
  6. Candy Cane Popcorn (5th Dec)
  7. Toffee Apple (2nd Dec)
