It’s the fourth game in the first round of the Tea Fancier Tea Cup Championships and we’ve seen some corkers of matches in the last three days. On the pitch today is Bird & Blend’s Great British Cuppa and Birchall’s English Breakfast. Which of these teas will be joining Pukka, English Tea Shop and Teapigs in the Quarter Finals?
Bird & Blend is an established favourite teamonger here at Tea Fancier Towers. Although regular readers of my reviews may want to point out at this juncture that I’ve given them quite a few negative reviews in the past.
This is because as a member of Bird & Blend’s monthly subscription tea club, I get sent a lot of blends that I wouldn’t have chosen for myself, including fruity herbal not-tea nonsenses, which I treat with the indifference that they deserve. However, when it comes to proper tea blends with proper Camillia sinensis teas, Bird & Blend and I are very much on the same page.
Great British Cuppa put in a stellar performance in today’s match. They’ve taken the unusual decision to include Chinese Yunnan in their lineup, along with Assam and Ceylon teas. And fair play to the squad, they all played brilliantly together.
Birchall is a newcomer here at TeaFancier.com. I really wanted to like this tea. It’s a Kenyan blend and I feel like I seem to always find fault with the Kenyan brews. I wanted this to be the tea where I said “I take back everything I said about Kenyan tea! I love this!” but sadly it wasn’t and I didn’t.
(In my defence, I have just ordered some Kenyan loose leaf from Curious Tea, my purveyor of fancy schmancy single-source leaves in an attempt to give African teas a fair crack of the whip.)
Bird & Blend is the worthy match winner here, and the aptly named Great British Cuppa is through to the next stage of the championships.
* Yes, it’s only Day 4 of the tournament and already I am struggling to think of football-related phrases to use as headings. So today you get a quote from The Fast Show. It was either that or Moss’s football bantz from The IT Crowd. “The thing about Arsenal is, they always try to walk it in.”
