It’s Match 3 in the Tea Fancier Tea Cup Championships today and in a nice bit of serendipity, the two teas in the competition with “Everyday” in their name are playing one another.

Twinings Everyday versus Teapigs Everyday

You only need to look at the size of the tea bag boxes in the photo to determine which of these teas is my regular everyday brand and which is an experimental newcomer. Twinings Everyday is the de facto defending champion in this tournament and has served me well for some years now. It is a tasty black tea that I am happy to serve to visitors, and is the tea I reach for when I need to be degroggified after an afternoon nap. (The rules are: Earl Grey when I first wake up in the morning and Not-Earl-Grey when I wake up at any other time of the day. I don’t know why this is.)

I have no complaint with Twinings Everyday. However, once it was placed in the arena with the far superior Teapigs Everyday Brew, it was never going to stand a chance.

Teapigs teabags are basically loose leaf teas in a pouch (or ‘temple’ as they rather endearingly – if somewhat pretentiously – like to call it). In a recent PG Tips review, I emptied out some tea bags into saucers in order to demonstrate different grades of tea. Teapigs with its neatly rolled recognisable leaves was in a league of its own.

And God, you absolutely can taste the difference. There’s no doubt about it, Teapigs Everyday Brew is definitely going through to the quarter finals.

This beautiful full-bodied brew hits every spot you could possibly want it to (including some spots you might not even know you had). I would say that it has everything I could want from a cup of tea, but that would be premature.

We are still in Round One of the competition and there are ten more tea blends to try. There is plenty of time for other teamongers to outwow Teapigs’ wowness. But if I were a bookie taking bets on the Tea Fancier Tea Cup Championships (which I’m not because as sole arbitrator of the competition that will be somewhat unethical of me), I would certainly be offering favourable odds on Teapigs Everyday Brew.
