We’re nearing the end of the first round of the Tea Fancier Tea Cup Championships. By tomorrow we’ll know all eight teams that have made it through to the quarter finals. Teams are selected for each match by pulling pieces of paper out of a tea caddy and I was very excited about today’s selection, because it means that the two names left in the tin are Yorkshire Gold and Dorset Sunshine Blend. Tomorrow is going to be an epic battle of North and South!

Ahmad and Brew Tea English Breakfast

But first, it’s Brew Tea Co and Ahmad who must face one another on the pitch. Brew Tea were off to a flying start, even before the kettle had finished boiling because they use proper whole tea leaves in their bags, which makes its rival look like a sachet of dust by comparison.

There isn’t a great deal going on with Ahmad. Their breakfast tea is a combination of Ceylon, Assam and Kenyan teas, but the resulting brew tasted of nothing much at all. It’s surprising how something that is made entirely of tea can taste so very un-tea-like.

Brew Tea English Breakfast, on the other hand, has all the flavour one could wish for. The tea is described on the box as “strong and malty” and I think, under other circumstances, it might be stronger and maltier than I would like. It’s certainly a punchy little number.

Compared to its own opponent’s lacklustre efforts, Brew Tea’s Assam and Ceylon blend was exactly what I wanted: A tea that tastes unmistakeably of tea. And some very nice tea at that.

Congratulations Brew Tea Co. You are through to the next round.
