Chai Wallah Margate – Pink Grapefruit

Hot on the heels of my Black Chai review the other day, we have another Chai Wallah Margate tea. This time it’s herbal tisane blend Pink Grapefruit.

Pink Grapefruit jumped to the top of the ‘Teas To Review’ list by somewhat underhanded means. It’s not so much that I was super-keen to try this blend of apple pieces, rosehip, hibiscus, orange peel, safflower and natural flavouring.

It’s just that this blend was stinking the box up and had to be removed and placed in solitary confinement before all my other teas started absorbing the flavour. I didn’t want my readership to be subjected to a slew of reviews remarking on the unexpected pink grapefruitiness of Rose Earl Grey or Caramel Chilli Rooibos.

So Pink Grapefruit has already started our relationship in a state of disgrace. It’s basically been placed on the naughty step. I endeavour to be a fair-minded reviewer though and shall try not to hold this tisane’s anti social behaviour against it.

As fruit teas go, Chai Wallah Margate’s Pink Grapefruit is very fruity. There’s a strong grapefruit flavour which – possibly due to the powers of suggestion – is decidedly pink grapefruit rather than the regular yellow kind.

You’ll have noticed, however, outside of the ‘natural flavourings’, pink grapefruit does not feature in the ingredients list. This is a shame. I have nothing against natural flavourings in my tea and tisane blends. I know the deal. I know if I drink, say, a rose-flavoured tea, then the rose flavours come primarily from the added flavourings rather than any rose petals jotted decoratively in amongst the leaves. I still like to see the rose petals though. And the same is true of Pink Grapefruit. There’s already orange peel in here, would it have hurt to bung in some dried grapefruit peel? I think it shows commitment to the vision.

Pink Grapefruit is a non-tea fruit tea blend and, as regular readers know, I find it hard to get excited about these. It’s fine, but it’s still basically hot squash. In this case, a very, very grapefruity one.

Of course if hot grapefruit squash sounds like a thing you need in your life, I would urge you to give Chai Wallah Margate Pink Grapefruit a go. Just don’t store it with your other tea blends, or any other foodstuffs. This is a tea that wants to share its flavour with the whole world.
