It’s the third day of Lunar New Year. Today is Chikou (赤口), otherwise known as The Day Of The Poor Devil. It is considered inauspicious today to visit people or receive guests. This is quite handy, as I had no plans to go anywhere or see anyone today anyway, and now I can say that it is because I’m honouring Chikou.

Today’s tea is a Taiwanese one. Curious Tea’s Organic Jade Oolong is produced in Taiwan’s Nantou County. This tea is very much at the green end of the oolong green/black spectrum. It’s light and floral and really rather lovely.

According to Curious Tea’s website, it comes from the Cui Yu ‘Green Jade’ cultivar, also known as TRES#13. TRES is the Tea Research and Extension Station of Taiwan. This is something that I had never heard of before and I like the idea there is a definitive numbering system of Taiwanese tea. (Milk Oolong, for future reference, is TRES#12.

I’m still a relative newbie on my tea journey. There’s something both exciting and reassuring about learning how very, very serious other people are about tea.

Curious Tea’s Jade Oolong is a tea that deserves to be taken seriously. Or, you know, you could drink it flippantly. That’s probably how I did it. I downed several steepings of this delightful, fresh, spring-y oolong and thought “That was delish”. I probably did a satisfied post-tea “Ahh” as well. So you know I meant it.

Today’s featured book is not a book. It’s the ‘Formosa Oolong’ card from The Tea Deck: 50 Ways To Prepare, Serve And Enjoy by Sara Perry. (Formosa is the old Portuguese name for Taiwan, bestowed on the island in the high-handed manner of European explorers in the sixteenth century.)
