Guess what? I hate Cardigan Caravan slightly less than I hate other Lapsang Souchongs!

My Score

Morgan’s Brew – Cardigan Caravan

Last year Morgan’s Brew sent me a boxload of free tea. Not teeny tiny sample packets either. Whopping great 100g bags of the stuff. It is taking me an embarrassingly long time to review them all.

I reviewed their Brecon Breakfast tea recently and mentioned that the only two Morgan’s Brew teas I had left to try were two that I didn’t think I’d like – some herbal business that’s still in the tea stash and this here Cardigan Caravan.

Russian Caravan – the rather than more famous Soviet tea cousin of Cardigan Caravan – contains Lapsang Souchong and, as I may have mentioned once or thrice, I don’t like Lapsang Souchong. Cardigan Caravan continues this ignoble tradition, being a blend of Taiwanese oolong and Lapsang Souchong.

After I expressed my concerns in the Brecon Breakfast review, my Instagram tea friends all urged me to give Cardigan Caravan a go. “Try it. You might like it.” was a general consensus.

And actually, having a cup of this suits my purposes pretty well. I’ve just finished reading Kate Valent’s A Tempest in a Teapot and I was looking for a tea to pair with it so I could slip it into a tea post. As Lapsang Souchong plays a rather significant role in Valent’s delightful tea-based romance, it just had to be this one.

So, after all that, did I enjoy Cardigan Caravan? Well, ‘enjoy’ might be too strong a word but I didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would. I even managed to drink the whole mugsworth. The oolong may have had a lot to do with it.

I can confidently state that I hated Cardigan Caravan less than I’ve hated any other Lapsang Souchong-based teas. And if that isn’t a ringing endorsement, I don’t know what is.
