T2 – Tummy Tea

T2’s Tummy Tea consists of peppermint, liquorice, fennel and marigold petals. It is – as you will have already inferred by its name and ingredients – an infusion to be taken if you have indigestion or other tummy troubles. And these were the circumstances under which I drank it.

Having had far too many wheat-based products in the previous 24 hours, I was in need of something to soothe the swirling hellscape of my gut, and Tummy Tea looked like it would fit the bill. (And yes, I know self-diagnosed wheat intolerance is such a cliché. I should pretend I have an intolerance to something more obscure, like moonlight or the letter W.)

Peppermint tea always seems to do the trick under these circumstances and it was certainly the case here. I was all set to wow you with REAL ACTUAL SCIENCE to back up my peppermint tea wellness assertions, but sadly the Internet has let me down.

While there have been a number of studies into the healing properties of peppermint, these have all been done using peppermint oil – sometimes externally applied. In my – admittedly fairly cursory – research, I couldn’t find any proper scientific studies conducted on infused dried peppermint leaves.

I found an article on Healthline.com which claimed in its heading to list “12 Science-backed Benefits of Peppermint tea“. But every single item cited studies using peppermint oil. It used a lot of weaselly sentences like “it’s possible that peppermint tea could have similar effects” which is just too damn vague for my liking.

I am therefore going to assert the peppermint tea is good for digestion because, astrologically, it falls within the auspices of the planet Venus and leave it at that. (It’s worth noting that T2 don’t make any pseudo-scientific claims for Tummy Tea, describing it only as a “minty after dinner treat”.)

Peppermint, liquorice and aniseed are literally three of my least favourite things to find in a tea or tea-like beverage. (I have no strong opinions about marigold petals.) So I was surprised that I didn’t dislike this drink as much as I was expecting to. I’d go as far to say it was not completely disgusting. Which feels like high praise under the circumstances.

I’m never going to actually fancy this tea, obviously, but I could tolerate it. Maybe I need a sister blog for Tea Fancier called Tea Tolerater for occasions such as this.
