The Tea Fancier Guide To Teaspoons

Being a tea fancier, I have a lot of tea-related whatnots in my house. Aside from approximately thee billion boxes of tea, there are mugs, cups, saucers, teapots and, of course, teaspoons. But have you ever wondered exactly what tea-related spoonware I use? Of course, you haven’t. You’re a busy person, and – thank goodness – you have much better things to think about. Nevertheless, regardless of whether you want it, I have put together the Tea Fancier Guide To Teaspoons (and other related tea cutlery).

Tea Scoop

This is the most important and often used member of the tea Fancier cutlery arsenal. Purchased from Chai Wallah Margate (and no doubt also available elsewhere), this scoop is perfectly designed to measure the perfect amount of tea and effortlessly pour it into a fillable tea sack. Because it only handles dry tea and doesn’t get involved in tea stirring, it doesn’t need washing, and it is very rarely out of service.

Tea Measuring Spoon

This spoon from Bird & Blend also measures out the perfect amount of tea and was a firm favourite at Tea Fancier Towers before the arrival of the tea scoop, after which I changed my allegiance completely. And now this spoon sits around unused all day, presumably reminiscing about its glory days before the scoop showed up.

Matcha Spoon

This spoon has never been used. I have reviewed ONE (1) matcha in over a year of tea fancying. I really enjoyed the experience and was so giddy with excitement that I ordered a bunch of matchas, a whisk and this spoon from Bird & Blend. I have thus far completely failed to do anything with them. I should really get on that.

Ahmad Spoon

This spoon was a free freebie from Ahmad tea after I attended a tea event they hosted. It was one of many freebies, including a tin of Kew Breakfast tea, a glass mug, a tea tasting session and a very fancy slap-up afternoon tea at Kew Gardens Conservatory. I repaid their kindness by reviewing their breakfast tea and saying it was a bit shit. I still feel bad about that, to be honest.

Flower Teaspoons

These are my regular teaspoons for stirring, smooshing tea bags and the like. I say ‘regular’ but look at them! They’re shaped like flowers! There’s a rose and a pansy and a sunflower and all sorts! I photographed them in order of spikiness because that is the order in which I use them. I worry that the spikier members of the team might puncture a tea bag. There need to be a lot of teaspoons in the dishwasher before I break out the cherry blossom or daffodil spoon. That said, the daffodil functions very well as a makeshift spork.

Cat Teaspoon with Prongy Bits

This teaspoon was a gift from my daughter, and even though I never use it, it is still my favourite. The prongy bits are designed to hold it in place in a mug. A fairly useless bit of functionality because (a) most tea cups are the wrong shape and (b) who the hell leaves their teaspoon in the cup in the first place? I love it nevertheless. It has a cat on it, and its role is to sit in the spoon caddy looking pretty. Also, I imagine that at night when all my spoons come to life and have Toy Story-esque adventures, Cat Spoon here is the plucky ringleader.
