Coconut Truffle: White tea and chocolate done right

My Score

Whittard – Coconut Truffle

Coconut Truffle tea contains white tea, cocoa kernels, coconut, carob, apple pieces and blackberry leaves. I’ve had it in the tea stash for some time but had been reluctant to give it a go. This is because Whittard’s other white tea and chocolate effort – its White Chocolate blend – was so terrible that I needed time for the emotional scars to heal.

Thankfully, Coconut Truffle tea is much, much nicer than White Chocolate. It had to be. White Chocolate was a grim, greasy, oversweet affair that honestly had nothing to recommend it. Coconut Truffle, on the other hand, is light and fun and really quite pleasant to drink.

Whittard Coconut Truffle Tea

The biggest difference between the two teas is that Coconut Truffle uses straightforward cocoa kernels rather than bits of oily white chocolate. Oh, and it’s got coconut in it. That’s another big difference. You can’t go wrong bunging a bit of coconut in your cuppa, in my opinion.

The apple bits and blackberry leaves are there to impart sweetness. I’m not usually a fan of either, but I’ll tolerate them here. They know their place and stay thoroughly in the background, thankfully not tipping this tea into tisane territory.

The white tea here is so robust and tasty that you might be tempted – as I was – to add some milk, in the spirit of scientific investigation, to see what happens. I don’t recommend you do that. I mean, it tastes fine with added milk, but the look of the thing afterwards is so pale and weak-looking that it rather takes the joy out of drinking it. Serves me right, really. I knew full well that adding milk to white tea was a ludicrous notion.

Whittard Coconut Truffle Tea

Having stashed this tea for so long, I went on Whittard’s website to check it was still in stock. Happily, it is. Even more happily, White Chocolate tea is nowhere to be found. Look, I know I probably can’t take any credit for White Chocolate’s downfall, but I did describe it as like “drinking a cup of white tea where someone has added a splash of vegetable oil and an artificial sweetener,” so if I helped in any way to rid the world of it, then I’m a happy woman.

Today’s featured book is White Nights by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.
