It’s Day 2 of the Tea Fancier Tea Cup Championships! And the two teas that I have pulled out of the hat (well, re-purposed tea caddy) are … Williamson English Breakfast and English Tea Shop English Breakfast.

Williamson’s English Breakfast and I did not get along, sadly. To me, it tasted a bit rough and, well, PG-Tips-ish. Interestingly, Williamson’s is a Kenyan tea blend and other teas I have found disappointing recently have also been from Kenya. Maybe I just don’t like Kenyan tea?

(I suspect it’s a bit more complicated than that. Kenya produces a lot of mass-produced low quality tea for the likes of PG Tips. However, I am sure that there are some artisanal high quality tea producers in Kenya making delicious tea that I need to check out. I just don’t think Williamson’s tea suppliers are one of those.)

I don’t regret my Williamson tea purchase though because the tea bags came in an awesome elephant design tea caddy. So even if I don’t like the tea, I have a lovely tin which I’ll probably fill with the winning teabags in this here competition.

Given my dislike of its competitor, English Tea Shop was going to get a bit of an easy win here but their English Breakfast is an enjoyable brew all the same. It’s a blend of Ceylon and Assam (which seems to be the favoured English Breakfast blend). The Assam is very much in evidence giving a strong punchy flavour to the tea experience.

I don’t think this is going to be the most memorable match in the TF Tea Cup Championships. It’s more of a nil-nil draw with English Tea Shop getting though on penalties. (Or are penalties more exciting than normal goals? I’m not sure. I think my inability to make meaningful football references is going to let me down a bit during this tournament.)

Nevertheless, congratulations are in order. English Tea Shop, you are through to the Quarter Finals!
