It’s Day 4 of my Bird & Blend Advent Calendar and today we have ‘Winter is Coming’. Having some actual tea in this tea blend – and a Chinese Pu-Erh tea blend at that – means that I greeted today’s tea bag with open arms. Three days of herbal not-teas was a bit of a slog to be honest.
The fact that this is an utterly bonkers beverage did nothing to dampen my spirits. The name of this tea is clearly a homage to Game of Thrones. In addition to the Pu-Erh, it contains ginger, peppermint, red peppercorns, chilli and blue cornflowers. (By the way, I got blue cornflowers and blue peaflowers muddled up in my head before I drank this tea. I made it in a glass mug because I was expecting it to turn a weird colour.)
The cool flavour of peppermint is designed to contrast with the heat of the ginger, pepper and chilli. A Brew of Ice and Fire, if you will. It’s a bizarre combination of flavours that seemed to be at war when as with one another like … oh, something Game of Thrones-y. I was going to whack in an analogy here but I’ve never actually watched the show.
It tastes quite medicinal. It’s a bit like drinking a Fisherman’s Friend. I don’t not like it but the whole effect is rather startling. But, fellow tea-fanciers, let’s not forget that it does have good honest Camelia sinensis in here. And after my incessant bleating over the last three days, I’m sure we’re all grateful for that.
Today’s featured book is still The Night Before Christmas by Clement C Moore. The action is hotting up now. “When out on the lawn, there arose such a clatter. I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.”
