Bird & Blend Advent Calendar Day 21 – Christmas Cake

While Christmas Cake doesn’t quite match Mince Pie‘s pure Christmassiness in a tea mug, it’s pretty damn close.

It contains Sri Lankan black tea, cinnamon, cloves, orange peel, pine needles, almond, vanilla and natural flavouring. I’m a bit confused about those pine needles. I mean, I’m happy to have them there. They impart a nice, Retsina-y, pine forest vibe to the taste of the tea.

But seriously, what kinds of cookbooks are Bird & Blend using when they make their Christmas cakes? I’ve made a fair few Christmas cakes over the years and never once have I thought, “You know what this needs? Some of those needles that are dropping off the tree!”

Actually, the more I think about it, the more nonsensical it is. I make my Christmas cake at least a month before the tree goes up. Where would I even source pine needles in this scenario?

The baffling foliage doesn’t hinder the pleasingness of the tea though. This tea is very pleasing indeed. It’s like a mash-up between Lady Grey and Masala Chai with some extra Christmas twiddly bits.

This is to my mind the best of all possible worlds.
